Being mindful of what your students hear from you day in and day out is a crucial part of building a healthy and welcoming classroom environment. Here are some simple phrases that can make a world of difference in how your students feel and respond toward you. Take some time to read through them and ask yourself if these are the kind of phrases your students hear from you. If not, what can you do to start incorporating them into your daily dialogue?
Good morning.
I’m glad to see you.
Have a great day!
You are special and important to me.
Thank you for working hard.
I appreciate what you do/your hard work.
I’m proud of you.
You seem tired today. Is everything okay.
I’m sorry you’re sick. I hope you feel better.
Are you doing okay?
I’m sorry.
Please forgive me.
You are going to be sensational!
I’m excited for your future.
I'm praying for you.
Yes sir/ma’am, you can.
I’m always happy to help!
Thank you for being someone of integrity. I admire that.
I enjoy spending _____ block with you.
I can’t wait to see you again!
Please.
Thank you.
I hope this list helped to jog some thoughts. The seemingly "little" things make a big difference in creating a classroom environment where all feel welcome and cared for.
Be in tune…stay in touch...and go out and change your classroom by changing what you say and how you say it! :)
